The Culture of Goa

Earlier a Portuguese colony, Goa is often called the ‘Rome of the East’. It is arguably the most western culture influenced or westernized state of the entire nation as most of the Goans adopted the western culture. Goa has a beautiful and rich cultural heritage which is composed of music, dances of various forms, their folk songs, visual arts and folk tales. Football is the dominant sport in this state as the Goans are fond it. Tourism in Goa is the primary source of occupation, probably after fishing. Hence, environmental issues are taken very seriously in the state of Goa and both, the citizens and government strive towards making Goa an environmental friendly state by reducing the level of pollution in the city.

Goa is a multi-ethnic state where people of various religions live together in peace and harmony. According to the Census conducted in the year 2011 (Census is conducted once every 10 years and the next survey is scheduled for 2021), the two major religions in Goa are Hinduism and Christianity consisting of 66 percent and 25 percent of the total population respectively. The total percentage of Islam followers in Goa is 8.5 percent. People of other religions such as Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism etc. are present in Goa in small number. The rate of Atheism followers in Goa is also high, but a specific number for the same is not officially recorded. The people of Goa maintain a perfect harmonious society to live in and participate in other’s festivals with enthusiasm. People all over the world visit Goa to be a part of the Indo-Latin carnivals every year. New Year celebrations in Goa is done with quite a show and pomp.

Night life. This is one more thing about Goa which is popular around the globe and attracts many foreign visitors throughout the year. Hotels, resorts, bars, restaurants and casinos are in abundance in the state as it is the most preferred tourist destination in the country. It is one of the dream destinations of many people in the world, a survey has suggested. The dishes consisting of seafood such as crabs, lobsters, prawns and fishes is extremely popular in Goa and one must try it during a visit to Goa. Music festivals like Sunburn and VH1 Supersonic has defined Goa as the music capital of India over the period of time.
