The 12 Reasons Behind Bearing Failures

Obviously, things break and fail. Even with the best prevention measures, they have to fail at some point. Bearings are not an exception. However, this does not mean you cannot take precautions to contain the expensive downtime problems. One of the solutions is to get JCB spare parts. With the right spare parts, you can never fail.

Below are major factors that contribute to bearing failure in heavy machines and the best prevention considerations you can put in place. With this knowledge, you will be better placed to take advantage of the value in the bearing by optimally strengthening your application.

Failure to Lubricate
Statistics show that 80% of bearing failures result from lack of or improper lubrication. This also includes using insufficient lubrication and applying lubricants that are not for the application and exposure to unbearable temperatures. Hence, use the right lubricants and apply the right portions within correct intervals.

When foreign substances find their way into the bearing via cleaning agents and lubricants contamination happens. This can include but not limited to dust, grit, dirt and steel chips that might be at the working space or on dirty hands. Clean your hands, the work area, fixtures, and tools before working on bearings.

Wrong Mounting
You need to follow manufacturer’s instructions while mounting bearings. If possible take course to master the art. You should mount your bearing on the rotating ring with a press fit.

Misalignment result from bent shafts, shaft shoulders, spacers, and clamping nuts that are out of square plus improper installation. To avoid this you should inspect housings and shafts for shoulder runout and bearing seats.

False Brinelling
When rotation is lacking there is no flow of lubricant on the bearing. Also, when the balls move rapidly lubrication wears away resulting in false brinelling. Use lubricants with anti-wear additives and get rid of external vibration causing ball movements.

Moisture, the grease of bad quality, acid, and condensation can cause abrasive corrosion on bearing and ball surfaces. The solution is diverting fluids away from these areas and also employ bearing materials like stainless steel.

Fluting (Electrical Damage)
Direct and alternating current constantly flowing through the bearings can lead to fluting. You need to block these currents from flowing through the bearing area or insulate the bearings.

Spalling (Fatigue)
Bearing fatigue results from overloading, excess preload, too much tightening and overusing the bearing. The solution is replacing the bearing when they meet their lifespan and always apply the recommended load.

Overheating is the cause of lubricant bleeding and inefficiency. This leaves behind crustiness and dryness thus exposing bearings to wear. Additionally, high temperatures make the metal to lose its hardness thus causing the material to fail earlier. You can provide supplemental cooling and adequate paths for heat to mitigate overheating.

Putting excess loads on bearings commonly cause failure. To overcome this, reduce the load or upgrade the bearings to fit your needs.

Mishandling and Improper Storage
This includes storing in high-temperature conditions and exposing bearings to dust and dirt before use. Wrong storage causes dusty and damp bearings. Ensure you store bearings in clean and room temperature conditions and unwrap them only when about to install.

With excess loading, you might get tight fits and tiny movements between fitted parts cause loose fits. Select the right bearing size for application and install according to the guide provided by the manufacturer. Also, get JCB spare parts that are genuine to achieve exact fits for your application.
