Several heart attack fatalities have been reported during garba festivities in Gujarat. These deaths might have been triggered by existing health conditions, prolonged fasting, improper diet, and a lack of awareness about common heart issues.
In one instance, at least 10 individuals died from heart attacks during garba celebrations across Gujarat in a single day. The youngest victim, a 17-year-old named Veer Shah, fell ill suddenly while participating in a garba dance in Kapadvanj. He was rushed to the hospital after his nose started bleeding but unfortunately passed away due to a heart attack.
His family, grieving the loss, issued a heartfelt plea to take breaks during garba sessions to avoid similar tragedies. Another young person, a 19-year-old engineering student in Jamnagar, also lost their life during a garba dance due to suspected heart failure.
Dr. Mohit Bhutani, an assistant professor of cardiology, highlighted that while heart attacks in young people are rare, they can occur during vigorous activities like dancing. Factors such as drug misuse, especially stimulants like cocaine or amphetamines, can escalate heart rate and blood pressure, increasing the risk of a heart attack.
Dr. V. Vinoth Kumar, a senior cardiologist, outlined various factors that could contribute to heart attacks during garba or other intense activities, including pre-existing heart conditions, overexertion, heat, dehydration, and substance abuse. These insights underscore the importance of being mindful of one’s health during festive celebrations.
