Now that you have unpacked you stuff and have settled in your cozy new apartment, the next thing to consider is: what to do with the moving boxes?

Dumping them in the trash wouldn’t be the right thing to do. Our movers in Brooklyn NY take the proper care of the empty boxes and the packing supplies after they have moved your belongings. But if your move was a DIY one, then our following tips can help you deal with all the left-out cardboard boxes and supplies.

  1. Disposing Off the Cardboard Moving

Give Them Away: Don’t just throw away the cardboard boxes in the bin. Give the boxes away to the needy if you find any around you. Or, keep them for the time, may be you find people who are in search for free moving boxes for their move.

Sell the Boxes away: Search the internet and find some companies online to sell your boxes online. Choose one and give them a call, they will come to your place and pick up the boxes and pay you the small amount for each box. Try websites like:

  • com
  • com

Store your belongings: Keep some of the sturdy moving boxes for storing your hosehold items like books, stuff that you use less often. You can also make them useful in your children’s school project or maybe your cat needs a new home to take a nap. If you don’t need them, may be someone in your neighborhood does. With sturdy, quality moving boxes, the options are endless! So instead of trashing them bring them into some use.

Donate the boxes to a Charity: Donate the boxes once you’re done with your unpacking. The heavy-duty boxes my be needed by the schools to store books. Ask your neighbors to see if there are any organizations in need of some cardboard boxes. You will feel happy on donating the boxes to a worthy cause.

Recycle the boxes: In case you find your moving boxes damaged during the move, you can consider to recycle them. The dirty and worn out recycle boxes can be broken down and taken to a local recycling center. Ask the nearby recycling center about the conditions under which they accept the boxes for recycling. Some companies require the boxes to be flattened and there are some that even require a certain number of moving boxes to qualify for their pick-up services.

  1. Disposing off the Packing Paper and Bubble Wrap

After unpacking you might be left with plenty of packing paper with you. Use this in your new home for covering the floor or furniture during the repair works. The paper can also be used to pack certain items that needs to be stored away.

In case of newsprint, torn paper, or, damaged bubble wrap, we recommend you to recycle these.

  1. Packing Peanuts

There are two types of packing peanuts:

  • Styrofoam
  • Starch

The Styrofoam peanuts are non-degradable. Send them to the companies that can reuse them. But the peanuts that are made up of starch are degradable. Cut them in small pieces and degrade them in water or soil.

  1. Custom Made Expensive Packaging

If you purchased expensive boxes for your move that were customized to your needs, e.g. the designed crates, we recommend to keep these with you. These are quite difficult to get again in case you need to move again. Preserve these boxes as you never know how beneficial they may prove for you.

Pro Tip: Storing all the packing materials in basement or store, assuming that you may find them useful in future is definitely not a good idea. With time they will clutter your new home and will become useless too. Keep them only if you know that you will be using them in a year’s time.
