Placement Interview: Brace for the Unknown

  1. Why do you think we should hire you as opposed to the other candidate ?

Well, answering this question might be a bit trick and might take the fresher’s off guard. Keep in mind that the recruiter is not seeking for the band qualification details and the graves-sounding degrees you might have collected, it’s already outlined in your CV. Herein comes your soft skills to play. The recruiter is looking for your communication and briefing skills. Repeating your background details won’t help. You have to market your USP factors in terms of aligning them professionally. Impress upon the recruiter why hiring you is going to help the origination, what are the value-added skills you have acquired and how it will benefit the organisation. In short, it is an advertising of your qualities in relation to your job.

A note of caution: Don’t start bragging yourself. Just keep it brief and objective, as per the job demand.

  1. How do you like to be managed?

The recruiter is essentially trying to determine the level of pressure you are comfortable with. So better be transparent in your response. Exercise your positive attitude and discretion. Let them understand your professional approach in task-execution as a part of your job responsibility and that you can put up with extended pressure with situational demands.

  1. Why are you leaving your previous job?

Do not ever speak ill of your previous employer, even if you have had conflicts. It gives a negative vibe about your personality in the first place. Maintain discretion in what you let out and be objective in your answers–it is the thumb-rule of professionalism!

  1. Scenario 1:

The CEO of Company ABC interviewed the candidates himself. The candidates were given a pen and paper. The confused interviewees sat confused, staring blankly at the boss. Each of them came in by turn:

“What do I write in here?”

“Nothing”, replied the smiling CEO

Each of them sat quietly.

“You may go now.”

Everyone left, except one. The CEO was impressed with this young guy. Only he wrote, ‘Nothing‘.

To work smart is the trick!

  1. Scenario 2:

A reputed fashion designing company India was interviewing a set of candidates for the campus admission. They interviewed a girl. The 6-member interview panel asked few basic questions and asked her to leave. The girl thanked everyone and left her chair. Right when she reached the door, someone from the interview panel said, “wait!”

“My weight is 55 kg.”, she answered with a smile and left.

The girl cracked the interview from a group 10 interviewees.
