Character count
When you’re looking for the character count of a document, you might be confused because the character count of a text box is not the same as the character count of a document. This is because the character count includes text boxes, footnotes, and endnotes, as well as any other elements you might put in the document. When you want to get the character count of a document, you can use the character count feature in Word.
To convert character counts to words, click the ‘%’ symbol in the box to the right of each field. In the Fields dialog box, you’ll see a list of field names, including the number of characters and words. Make sure you choose the field that contains the text you’re aiming for. Page count

Word count dialog box
When you double-click the Status Bar, you’ll see the Word count dialog box. This window displays the word count for your document. This dialog box displays the number of words, lines, paragraphs, and endnotes in your document. You can change the settings in the Word count dialog box. Then, type in the number of words you need to enter in the document. You’ll see the total for the entire document.
You can specify the number of words for a document, including footnotes and endnotes. You can also choose to exclude textboxes, footnotes, or endnotes from the count. Using the Word count dialog box, you can get an accurate word count for any part of a document. Word count statistics will show you how many words were used in that section. Once you’ve entered the number of words, you’ll see the total in the Status Bar.
