Contact Lens Wearers Could Cause Blindness Due To Eye Infection Outbreak

Millions worldwide use contact lenses as a convenient, trouble-free alternative to glasses. Despite no consideration given to hygiene or proper lens treatment, the majority of contact lens wearers literally pop their contacts into their eyes every day. Recent evidence, however, indicates that this can cause severe eye damage or even permanent blindness.

According to the British Journal of Ophthalmology found a substantial rise in reported cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a preventable ocular infection caused by a single-celled organism called Acanthamoeba. 90 percent of patients affected are contact lens wearers, many of whom confess to poor eye hygiene such as swimming or bathing while wearing contacts, and do not follow proper hand-washing procedures before handling lenses. The infection causes the cornea to become inflamed and highly painful, which in most cases causes lost eyesight.

Even if you follow proper instructions for contact lenses and practice hygiene, something can go wrong and your eyes can get irritated.  Make sure to bring a pair of glasses with a new prescription and a contact lens case when you have to remove your lenses if you go out or go on a vacation.

Let’s discuss the reasons why one might choose LASIK over contact lenses and vice versa.

As LASIK reaches new levels of popularity, people of all ages are ditching their prescription contact lenses for laser vision correction. While LASIK surgery is extremely safe and effective, there are some people who are better off sticking with their contact lenses.

What Happens After LASIK?

LASIK is a safer choice for those with visual impairments. This method of procedure is easier and has greater long-term benefits than using contact lenses.

The vision is improved and after LASIK operation you can get the perfect vision. Due to the numbing drops which are used, the patient experiences less pain. Immediately or the next day, vision is rectified. Bandages and stitches after LASIK aren’t required.

Lenses & Lasik are used to improve eye conditions such as:

  • Astigmatism (Vision is distorted): Blurred state of close and distant vision due to the corneal uneven curves/flatness.
  • Myopia (Nearsightedness): A condition where you can see the near to objects unmistakably yet hard to see far away things. Both these cases resulted in the light beams to focus on the retina’s front rather than on it, darkening the faraway vision.
  • Hyperopia (Farsightedness): A condition where you can see the faraway objects unmistakably, however not the close by things.
  • Presbyopia (Bifocals are needed): Also Known as the Aging Eye condition, it alludes to long-sightedness brought about by the loss of flexibility of eye focal point happening for the most part in the middle and old age.

Some conditions can stop you from wearing lenses:

  • Not taking proper care of the lenses
  • Dirty working environment
  • Dry eye
  • Allergies
  • Eye infections

Clean the contact lenses to remove germs and prevent infections. They should be substituted every 3 months. Do not use contact lenses again. Dispose of the lens solution after each use, and let the case dry air.

The Bottom Line:

Contact lenses should not be used excessively and should be replaced after a while. Harm to the cornea can occur when not used properly and the cornea will attract infections over time. It is often better to choose Lasik over contact Lenses or Glasses for a permanent and long time solution.
