7 Flooring Options for an Outdoor Patio

There are many important decisions to make when you are designing a patio. From the type of roof on your new patio to its overall size, getting it wrong in the planning stage could cost you money and leave you with a patio tinged with disappointment.

One aspect you may not have considered yet is the type of flooring you want for your patio. If this is a renovation of an existing patio, you may have to work with what’s already there, but if you are starting from scratch, here are some flooring ideas worth checking out.

Tiles

Tiles are a popular choice. There are hundreds of different designs to choose from, so you should have no problem finding a tile that matches your home. Larger tiles are easier and quicker to lay, but try adding some mosaic tiles for a stylish vibe.

The great thing about tiles is that they are easy to clean. You can hose them down, sweep away dust and debris, and they always look fabulous.

Concrete

Concrete is cheap and cheerful, but not always terribly attractive. However, you can pimp up your concrete floor by polishing it, painting it, or using moulds to create a textured surface. If an existing concrete floor is cracked or unattractive, it may be best to cover it with a new type of flooring.

Wooden Planks

Reclaimed wooden planks are perfect if you want a retro feel for your patio. It doesn’t matter if they are worn or part-painted. This only adds to their charm. Create a framework and fix your lengths of wood in the style of decking. The end result will be a slightly raised decking area, which you can enhance with pot plants and quirky outdoor furniture.

Wooden Deck Tiles

Wooden deck tiles are an easy way to create a floor for a patio area. You can buy these in packs and they are super easy to put together. Mix and match with other types of flooring. For example, if your patio floor is concrete, use decking tiles to create a raised area for your dining table and chairs.

Natural Stone

Natural stone is resilient and attractive. It will look beautiful through sunshine and rain. Unlike some other flooring options, it won’t fade in the sun, but it will retain the heat so when the evenings cool down, your patio will stay warmer for longer. Natural stone can be expensive, but if you want a stylish patio, it really is the best choice.

Crazy Paving

Looking for a retro, quirky vibe for your custom patio? Make use of broken prices of paving stone and create a crazy paving design. This works brilliantly for indoor/outdoor living spaces, as you can use gravel and stones to inject some colour into the design. Add planters and fun decorative elements, solar lighting, and funky floor cushions.

Carpet

Using carpet may seem counter-intuitive, but indoor/outdoor carpet is designed to repel water and UV, so if you want a soft flooring for your patio, try this for size.
