Land Acquisition For Widening Of NH-66 By NHAI Advancing At A Great Pace

The National Highway 66 is one of the most important highways of India. The 1622 km long highway connects Panvel in Maharashtra to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, passing through Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. According to recent developments, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been planning major revamping of the highway.

NHAI will be working on the widening of a stretch of highway from Thuravoor to Oachira in Kerala. The 81.6 km stretch of road is will be expanded to 4 lanes having a width of 45 metres. The alignment stones for the project are soon to be laid down, while the centre marking will denote the boundary.

NHAI has already begun parts of the project in Kollam district of Kerala. According to sources, the alignment stones will be laid in Alappuzha in two weeks. Once that is done, the Revenue Department will be conducting surveys for land procurement. The survey is to be conducted by a number of experts who will ensure the acquiring of the finest land at the best possible rates. The Department has also held public meetings to know about any possible challenges involved and any grievances from the residents of the concerned areas.

As per NHAI, the project is supposed to get 126.6 hectares of Government and private land. A special unit has been recruited by the Revenue Department for the process of land acquisition.

The procedures for the land acquisition are too completed within a year in order to issue a 3D notification. The 3D notification is a declaration of acquisition of land. In case the procedures fail to be completed in a year, the 3A notification issued will become invalid, which is the power to acquire land. The proposed land is to be acquired from the following villages in Kerala:

  • Vayalar East
  • Cherthala North
  • Cherthala South
  • Kokkothamangalam
  • Thanneermukkom North
  • Mararikulam North
  • Kanjikuzhi
  • Kalavoor

  • Mannancherry
  • Komalapuram
  • Aryad South
  • Paravoor
  • Punnapra
  • Ambalapuzha
  • Purakkad
  • Thrikkunnapuzha
  • Karuvatta
  • Kumarapuram
  • Haripad
  • Karthikapally
  • Pallipad
  • Chingoli
  • Cheppad
  • Pathiyoor
  • Keerikkad
  • Kayamkulam
  • Krishnapuram

The National Highways Authority of India is taking tremendous measures to acquire lands for the expansion project of NH 66, which is expected to be done by August. The project has been assigned a budget of 7.50 crores. Once the expansion project gets completed, the stretch will function with a smoother flow of traffic as well as help streamline the various types of vehicles on the road.
