Precautions To Be Taken After The Cataract Surgery

What is cataract surgery?

What are the precautions to be taken during recovery period?

Cataract surgery is a surgery that hardly lasts for a few hours. It is a corrective surgery that restores vision. However, it is not possible for the patient to drive themselves home after it. Therefore, they should make appropriate arrangements prior for the same. You shouldn’t be surprised because it not only fixes your vision but also makes it sharper than before. However, observing few precautions in the initial weeks is necessary to prevent infections.

1.​ Do not put pressure over your eyes 

Do not bend down to pick up or move anything. As that will put pressure on your eyes. Also do not pick up heavy bags and appliances.

2.​ Eye-drops 

Use the prescribed eyedrops as told by the doctor at proper periods of time. Eyedrops usually contain steroids that speed up recovery and functioning of eyes. Avoid rubbing the eyes even if they feel very scratchy.

3.​ Eye makeup 

Do not wear contact lenses or eye makeup without asking the doctor. The content of eye makeup such as mascara, kajal, eye-liner can cause irritation.

4.​ Digital appliance usage 

Usage of computers, mobiles and other gadgets is not advisable for a few days after undergoing a cataract procedure.

5.​ Dusty areas 

Avoid going to any dusty areas that could cause infections inside your eyes. The same applies for places like beaches and industrial terrains. Strong sunlight also should be kept away from.

6.​ Driving 

Driving on the same day as the surgery is unsafe and hence not advisable. It is not advisable atleast for a day after getting operated for cataract.

7.​ Protective gear

It is advised that you wear the protective gear even while sleeping.

8.​ Gymming 

Irrespective of whether you are an avid gymmer or a fitness enthusiast visiting the gym everyday

9.​ Showers 

Avoid bathing in showers, as water tends to come out from it in great force. As compared to taking water from a bucket. Try and use the latter option because it is safe and there are no chances of hurting the eyes.

10.​ Avoid cooking 

The gas flame is likely to watering of the eyes affecting the cornea. So cooking is inadvisable in the week post undergoing cataract surgery.

It is important to contact an eye doctor at the very initial stage of spotting any symptoms. Also above mentioned points were just few precautionary measures to follow in the recovery period after undergoing cataract surgery. Do not forget to follow the instructions as asked by your ophthalmologist.
