NHAI’s Drive to Implement Cameras at the Toll Booths Set to Ease Traffic Flow

Traffic congestion at toll booths has been a matter of concern for quite some time now. With the number of vehicles increasing on the national highways, it is a matter of the prime hour to instill ways that would cater to such issues with ease. Keep these problems into consideration; the National Highways Authority of India is working on their next initiative concerning the installation of cameras at the toll plazas to keep the traffic flow in check. This was a step that most highway users have been seeking for a long time because of the worsening condition of the same at the toll plazas across the primary national highways in India.

There has been no official update regarding the date of installation of the cameras but the officials have claimed that they have already started working on the project and the same is expected to be functional in the upcoming six months. The cameras will be backed up with the latest technology which is going to provide with real-time updates of the traffic flow near the toll plazas across the national highways to the Command Centres and the regional offices. Officials from National Highways Authority of India have claimed that the progress of the process is going on effortlessly and there are chances that the project will be functional in the upcoming few months. The regional offices and the command centres along with the headquarters of NHAI have been installed with high-speed internet to ensure avoidance of any kind of glitch in the process of surveillance.

As per the claims stated by the Chief General Manager of NHAI, Mr Akhilesh Srivastava, the camera surveillance set-up at the toll plazas will provide the command centres and regional offices with time-stamped photos during the normal traffic flow. The same will convert into video mode, streaming live video if the traffic congestion at the plazas are heightened and can’t be brought under control in the next 30 minutes or so. This is what will provide with real-time updates so that the deployed personnel operating the command centres can take necessary steps to mitigate the issues concerning the congestion.

This is not the first strategy employed by the Government and the NHAI to work on the traffic condition at the toll plazas. The implementation of Electronic Toll Collection and the Traffic Incident Management System (in progress) are the two other projects that have imbibed their effective results in reducing the issues caused by the overflowing traffic at the booths. The high-end technology used in the project will inflict prompt results for smoother actions during times of need. The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Mr Nitin Gadkari further proclaimed that NHAI is planning on signing an agreement with the Korea Expressway Corporation to aid knowledge about the kind of audio-visual technology used by them in the same regard. The technology used by them provides with real-time data just by entering the vehicle registration number in the system, which can be beneficial to track a vehicle with ease in cases of emergency.
