Modern approaches to wood-fired hydronic heating

“Wood” is the oldest form of fuel available to the mankind as, before civilization, people used to live in forests, and trees were efficiently used by them for fulfilling various needs.

One of these needs was fire, which was necessary for cooking food, getting heat during cold and even keeping wild animals at bay.

Even after civilization, wood was used at large for the above purposes. A fireplace running with the help of wood was the common scenario in every house. But, with the increase in the availability of fossil fuels and oils, central heating systems, which operate using these, began to be used and favored by many.

This shift in people’s attitude was mainly due to the smoke and operational style of the wood-fueled heaters and boilers. But, we all know that petroleum is not procured from beneath the earth’s surface at every place and so many countries import the same. International trade is never easy and hence when petroleum shortage took place and its prices increased, people had no other option than to resort to the old fuel source i.e. wood.

But when situation regarding the fossil fuels, improved, people again moved to the luxurious style of heating for their home and office. However, this incident changed the perception of many in Australia, America, England and other parts of Europe.

They now realized the benefits inherited in wood-based heating systems and so researches began to take place for designing such systems by using the latest technology in order to overcome the disadvantages and thus making these the preferred choice for people around the world.

And therefore, significant changes took place:

  1. Wood gasification boilers were manufactured, which use the process of wood gasification.

  2. Wood pellet boilers were manufactured.

  3. Different techniques of conveyance and storage of wood were developed.

  4. The technology was utilized to make these products able to be monitored through mobile phones.

  5. Many user-friendly methods were developed, which can help these systems to work efficiently for years such as regular cleaning of the ash box.

  6. People use only standard wood and avoid filling the firebox with all kinds of available fuels as it can affect the efficiency of these systems.

Thus, modern boilers and heaters of all sizes and attractive design are now manufactured for residential and commercial spaces.

With these changes, the focus was also on reducing the harmful emissions from these products.

Wood hydronic boiler:

The latest heating system used is a wood hydronic boiler, wherein the water is used as a medium to transfer heat and so the amount of heat utilized for premises can be controlled effectively. The heat accumulated in the hot water storage tank can be used as and when required and also, this hot water can be used for other purposes. The unutilized water goes for reheating.

Benefits:

      • This hydronic heating system is not only energy efficient but also very safe.

      • The wood hydronic boiler is easy and convenient to use.

      • The smoke produced is very little, thus this system is environment-friendly.

Thus, Modern approaches to wood-fired hydronic heating can be summarized in the statement this system is being adopted by an increasing number of people and R&D efforts would continue in this field.
