Getting the most out of a space

You work hard, put a corpus of money in place and start scouting for a house or office space that could fulfill your dreams while also keeping an eye on the budget. What if we told you that having just a lot of space is nowhere a yardstick of having a satisfying home or office environment? That you can have a fantastic living or working experience by optimizing on the space you do have?

Here are 5 hacks to get the most out of relatively smaller commercial or residential spaces:

1) Optimize the third dimension

When we think of a space, we think in square meters. Thus thinking in cubic meters opens up a whole new dimension for you! Suddenly the house does not seem all that small huh! Residential Interior Designers try and utilize the height of your apartment to the fullest. The beauty of using vertical spaces is that not only does it act as a functional element, but also, done right, creates the illusion of depth and much more space than there is.

A few tips to achieve this are:

  1. Have floor to ceiling storage spaces.
  2. Liberal use of mirrors and reflective surfaces.
  3. Lofts. To store things or to create a cozy little sitting area or even a bedroom.
  4. Bunk beds for kids.
  5. Create the illusion of spaciousness by selecting relatively lower furniture.

2) Multifunctionality

Ensure every aspect of your home or office interior design contributes atleast more than one function. Some ideas to achieve this are:

  1. Use rugs to segregate one space from another.
  2. Use room dividers such as wooden frames and curtains to good use.
  3. Use glass walls instead of concrete to physically separate rooms while visually creating a sense of openness.
  4. Have partitions to customize your rooms.
  5. Customize your storage. That means utilize every nook creatively and get furniture that also double up as storage units.

3) Colors

The colors you select for your home or office go a long way in creating a sense of space and airiness or making a genuinely spacious apartment small and claustrophobic. For example, the color yellow is an excellent choice for kitchens, dining rooms and bathrooms, where it is energizing and uplifting. In halls, entries and small spaces, yellow creates a sense of expansiveness and welcome.

On the other hand the color red creates a sense of urgency, vigour and intent. Done right the color could create a sense of power in a very small space or make even the most expansive homes feel suffocating.

4) Orientation of house hold items

Furniture, cabinets, home-theatre and TV mounting units all take up space. How all these items are oriented in a room play a significant role in optimal space utilization. An interior designer has an innate capability of spatial thinking and can suggest the right kind of household items to be purchased. This allows you to utilize maximum floor space at the same time allowing enough space to move around, without bumping into things.

5) Create illusion of space using Lighting

Light up the walls. And darken the adjacent entryway. This way the brightness and thus the feeling of space in a room get accentuated. Extend curtain rods beyond the window frames, this allows in more light from the windows and draws the eye outwards. Also, have layers of lights across your homes and office spaces to create a sense of mental compartments. Thus creating another illusion of space and tranquility.
