Chana Dal: The Favorite Main Course Dal

Chana Dal is famous Indian dish, that is made using some easily available components & makes for an ideal dinner dish. Dal has been an integral part of each Indian household food & makes a perfect companion for the rice or chapati.

Chana Dal is definitely one of the most amazing delicious pulses & makes for an ideal main course dish for each occasion. The simple recipe could be made in few mins. And all you should have is Bengal gram/Chana dal, garam masala, ginger garlic paste, cumin powder, salt, chopped onions, green chilies, asafoetida, tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder. Chana Dal could be prepared in multiple ways, and we are here attempting the North Indian way of making the dish. To make the Dal more tender have to soak it for a while and hence it cooks much faster. So, enjoy!

Ingredients for Chana Dal:

– chana dal-100 gm
– chopped tomato-2
– ginger paste-1/2 tsp
– red chilli powder-1/2 tsp
– powdered turmeric-1/2 tsp
– asafoetida-1/4 tsp
– cumin seeds-1/2 tsp
– water-1 cup
– chopped green chilli-2
– finely chopped onion-1
– garlic paste-1/2 tsp
– garam masala powder-1/4 tsp
– coriander powder-1 tsp
– extra virgin olive oil-1 tbsp
– salt as per needed

For Garnishing:

– coriander leaves-1 tbsp

How to prepare Chana Dal:

Step 1) Soak chana dal in water for around two hrs. Clean it & put it in pressure cooker. Drop 1/2 tbsp of salt & one cup of water. Heat pressure cooker with moderate flame & after 1 whistle reduce the flame & cook for seven to eight mins. turn off the burner after five to six whistles.

Step 2) Meantime, heat olive oil in deep vessel on medium flame & drop onions & cumin seeds. Saute the onions till golden brown. Grind tomatoes & green chillies for making a thick paste. Add garlic-ginger paste in the vessel & then add tomato paste.

Step 3) Stir for two to four mins. Then add red chilli powder, salt, turmeric powder, garam masala, hing & coriander powder. Mix it properly. Now detach the lid of the cooker & place the chana dal into the vessel. Mix finely & cook for four to five mins. When done, put the dal into a serving bowl & decorate with some coriander leaves. Serve hot with the rice or rotis.
