Cape Town Accommodation Tips for Short Holidays

Planning a weekend trip or a short holiday can be stressful – from finding your Cape Town accommodation to ensuring that you have enough time to see and do as much as possible within your limited schedule. Whether you are visiting the city for a conference or business meeting, passing through en route to a nearby South African city or even planning a mini honeymoon, the trick is to plan ahead so that you are able to make the most of your time.

To help you plan a memorable short holiday, these tips are sure to get you started.

  • Book your accommodation as early as possible – this is essential for a holiday of any length, but for short trips it is even more important. As soon as you have the dates of your trip set, search online to find accommodation in Cape Town that best suits your needs. Apartments are ideal if you are travelling alone or with a partner or friend, while villas are best for larger travel groups. Self-catered options can be more flexible, while many villas also include catered services such as private chefs and housekeeping to free up even more of your time.
  • Hire a car for the duration of your trip – you want to be able to come and go easily, and wasting time trying to find transport can put a damper on things. Car hire makes it easier to go where you need to go, without having to wait around for cabs or public transport. Once you have your arrival dates, you can collect your vehicle at the airport or from the nearest branch of the car rental company you choose. Be sure to memorise the rules of the road, and either get a GPS enabled car or a recent street map to ensure that you don’t get lost when travelling to and from your Cape Town accommodation. Also remember that speeding is an offence in South Africa, along with drunk driving. Don’t take chances – it’s better to take it slow than rush and risk an accident.
  • Read an online travel guide or a guide book before leaving – this will give you some pointers on what you wish to see and do once arriving. Once you have a list of the places you wish to visit, you can plan your trip accordingly. Key highlights that you should not miss include Table Mountain, the Waterfront, Robben Island and the beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton. Another good idea is to divide your plans according to the area. For instance, if you are staying in the City Bowl, you can visit attractions within this part of the city on one day, and places such as the Constantia Wine Route and Kirstenbosch Gardens on another day. The City Explorer bus is also a great way to see all of the city’s most popular attractions, and departs from the Waterfront, close to accommodation in Cape Town that is within this area.
  • Don’t let the weather hold you back – if rain or overcast weather threatens to ruin your plans of exploring Table Mountain, there are plenty of other backup plans to consider. The Waterfront and Two Oceans Aquarium are excellent for indoor activities, while Canal Walk is another good option. You can even go ice skating at Grand West or enjoy a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants, all within reach of your Cape Town accommodation.
