Glass Shower Door Is Leaking? Do These Things

Dealing with water leaks is one of the most common jobs of a handyman. Bathtubs and showers are especially prone to leaks and, it can be detrimental to your walls, floor outside the shower or baseboard. You shouldn’t wait for anyone else to fix it as it is not very difficult to fix it yourself. Before fixing your shower door, you should know the following things:

  • The type of your shower door. It can be a sliding shower door, frameless shower door or a framed shower door.
  • The point of the leak. Finding out the exact point of the leak is essential to fix it.

Common shower doors are easy to fix as they mostly leak from the metal track that is holding the glass or from the door. It is not always visible but the damaging effect of the leaking become visible over time. The tricky part comes when you have a frameless shower door. They are durable and long-lasting but susceptible to water leaks. Daily wear and tear give way to leaks and most of these leaks can be repaired by professionals without replacing the entire glass. You can fix these frameless shower doors in the following ways:

  • Under The Door – When the frameless shower door is leaking through the gap under the door, you can install a shower door sweep. These sweeps are made from vinyl and are very easy to install. Confirm the size you need before buying and if you get a bigger size cut it after measuring the gap twice.
  • Leaks From Side – If the door is leaking up from either side, you can just seal the gap between the adjacent glass wall and the door itself.
  • Vertical Gap – If the water is leaking from the vertical gap, then your problem can be solved with a door jamb. This jamb is also very easy to install. You can install it with the help of double-sided tape and, the only thing you need to do carefully is cutting the plastic to the desired length.

You should also check the door hinges for calcium, soap scum, calcium and lime scale build up. Presence of these substances can interfere with the closing of the door. This will make it look like that the enclosure is leaking. Also, check your showerhead and make sure that is not pointed towards the exterior wall or the door. Most of the solutions given above can be applied by you without anyone’s help.
