An Introduction To Home Winemaking

If you have an interest in learning about home winemaking, why not go the extra step of actually growing the grapes that you will use. Tending to your own small but private vineyard can be a wonderful way to pass time, if this is an activity that sounds interesting to you, you should take a moment to learn about what grapevine species would be suitable for your region of the country.

Not every type of grapevine can be grown in all areas, for instance if living in California a different species would need to be used than if residing in Mississippi. Understanding how to select a suitable variety can help to ensure that you produce wines which are full of flavor and loved by all your friends.

Most grapes used in commercial enterprises come from a species native to Europe and West Asia known as vitis vinifera. There are several varieties of this species which have become popular with viticulturists in North America, for example Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Zinfadel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Riesling.

Being able to source different varieties of grape seed is not always easy, though thanks to the internet it has become somewhat simpler. Prior to ordering any seeds it is important to do a considerable amount of research.

It should be known that vitis vinifera would be almost impossible to grow in states such as Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana because of the somewhat humid climate. Likewise, this species would not do so well in the northern parts of the Midwest, as well as the plains, due to the harsh winters. But, if you live in California, or new England, vitis vinifera would be a good option.

Another two names to look out for are vitis mustangensis and vitis labrusca, both of which have fans within the wine making community in the USA and Canada. These species are more adaptable to the conditions present in cooler parts of North America.

Vitis labrusca is the species that is used to produce Delaware grapes. They can be grown in almost every area east of the Mississippi, though as they do not always ripen excessively sweet, a home winemaker may need to add a lot of sugar to their fermentation. Though not often used commercially, they are a perfect choice for small vineyards.

Vitis mustangensis is a variety that thrives in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Arkansas. The mustang grape is perfectly suited to these regions, unlike most European varieties. As with the labrusca grape, the mustang can be very sour and would need a lot of sugar added for it to make a palatable wine.
