Basics of google analytics
Google Analytics is a powerful tool that allows businesses to gather information on the activities of their customers. The most popular business digital marketing and website analytics solution, Google Analytics shows important visitor insights like where and when your visitors arrive, what pages they visit, and how long they spend on your website. It also helps you understand your traffic flow by identifying trends in traffic sources such as search engines and affiliates.
Google Analytics makes it easy to understand how customers interact with your website, which pages they visit and when, who clicks on their links… all the way down to how much time they spend on your site. Just a few minutes of setup and you’ll see everything you need to know about your visitors in one place.
Few terms to be known:
Account—an area where you can see all of your properties and make changes to them from one dashboard. You can have as many accounts as you like, and each account will have a unique view on that property’s details.
Property- The site or app you want to track.
Tracking Id- A unique code that we add to your website to track how visitors arrive and use the site, so we can provide you with detailed statistics.
Conversion- It means you get visits that turn into customers or potential customers. Conversions are created when someone visits your website and turns into a customer, or they download your app and turn into an active user.
Sign up for a google analytics account
To use Google Analytics, you will need a Google account. Go to google.com/analytics and click on Sign in or Create an Account on the upper left corner. If you’re already signed in, click on Access Google Analytics. Fill in the required information – account name, website name, URL, industry and time zone – and complete setting up your account.
Set up Google Analytics on your website
A Google Analytics Tracking Code is required to track your website. Once setup, you will be taken directly to the Tracking Code section after setting up your account. The tracking code must be on every page you wish to track.
If you are using a Google Analytics account, then you can add the tracking code to every page on your website. This requires you to manually add the tracking code each time you make a change to your site and is not ideal if you need to send specific content on different pages or generate unique reports across all pages.
